Qanuippitaa? in Nunavut

Qanuippitaa? means “How are we?” in Inuktitut. The name and spelling were chosen for the first ever Inuit health survey that was conducted in Nunavik in 2004. It was also subsequently chosen by ITK when it launched the national survey in 2019.

Survey Activation

The focus of the Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey (QNIHS) is on Inuit health and the social determinants of health, including housing, food security, mental wellness, health services, safety and security, education, income, livelihoods, and culture and language.

The survey and data gathering processes in Nunavut are designed by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI). The project is designed and owned by Inuit through ITK and the four Inuit representational organizations of Inuit Nunangat.

Survey Team

The QNIHS Nunavut research team will comprise mostly of Inuit from across Nunavut. The survey process is being driven by Inuit in a way that makes sense for Nunavut. The team members include Regional Coordinators, Community Coordinators, and Interviewers. Qanuippitaa? will also hire several support workers in every Nunavut community who will work while the survey is being conducted locally.

Community Engagement

The QNIHS Nunavut team will be visiting every community in Nunavut for in-person data collection.
Participants for the survey will be randomly selected from NTI’s enrolment list and will be representative of Inuit of all ages.

  • Participants will be contacted by a Community Coordinator or an Interviewer, either by phone, email or in-person.
  • Data collection is expected to start in 2024.
  • Interviews will take place at a venue within the community, with alternate arrangements made for those who have difficulties with mobility or have other needs.
  • A trained Interviewer will guide participants through the consent process before starting the survey.
  • An Interpreter will also be made available if required.
  • Interviewers will ask questions and will record answers using Samsung tablets and the information collected will be stored on a secure server at NTI.
  • Elders, mental health, and wellness supports will also be available to participants, if needed.
  • Participants of the survey will be compensated with gift cards for their time.

Sharing the Findings

Survey results will cover Inuit health and wellbeing and will be available for use by Inuit first. If approved by Inuit, results will also be shared and used by others, such as government policy makers and academic researchers. The information gathered in the QNIHS Nunavut will help decision-makers understand changes in Inuit health and make better health programs.

Once data collection is complete and the data has been analyzed, results will be shared with Inuit and Nunavut communities in the form of reports, fact sheets, infographics, and other communication materials. Results will also be shared on ITK’s and NTI’s QNIHS websites and will provide regional, territorial, and national results.

To ensure that results are accessible to everyone, they will be available in dialects appropriate to each Nunavut region. We will host community engagement events where results will be shared, where Inuit and community members will have opportunities to review and interpret the data. Results will not include any personal or identifying information.

The information gathered in the QNIHS Nunavut will help decision-makers understand changes in Inuit health and make better health programs.
