Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey in Nunavut
Qanuippitaa? means “How are we?” in Inuktitut. The name and spelling were chosen for the first ever Inuit health survey that was conducted in Nunavik in 2004. It was also subsequently chosen by ITK when it launched the national survey in 2019.
One of the main goals of Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey (QNIHS) is to provide an overview of the health and wellbeing of Inuit across Inuit Nunangat and those living in other parts of Canada outside of our homelands. The information collected will be of high quality and used to monitor changes, identify strengths and gaps experienced in our communities, and help inform impactful decision-making. Our hope is that this work will lead to improved health and wellbeing among Inuit.
Survey action
The survey and data gathering processes are approved by Inuit organizations and informed by the insights of Inuit Nunavummiut. The research methods combine Inuit knowledge and academic research, taking the “best of both worlds” to create a reliable, Inuit-specific, and ethical approach to health research.

Survey team
The QNIHS Nunavut research team will be mostly Inuit Nunavummiut – some local and some from around the territory – so the survey process is being driven by Inuit in a way that makes sense for Nunavut. Survey results will cover Inuit health and wellness and will be available for use by Inuit first. If approved by Inuit, results will also be shared and used by others, such as government policy makers and academic researchers.
Sharing the Findings
The information gathered in the QNIHS Nunavut will help decision-makers understand changes in Inuit health and make better health programs. For more information, see Results.
